THE THREE ISLAND TOUR OF FRANCE

July 12 - 23, 2006

"But," you say, "France is not an island nation."

Ahhh, but it is...if you know where to look.

Join Your Man in Europe for a unique approach to visiting France. Our "Three Island Tour" captures the best of the best in a single trip. This free-wheeling, leisurely dance through one of the world's most beautiful and captivating countries takes us to three main "island" destinations: L'Isle sur la Sorgue, Ile St-Louis, and Mont-Saint-Michel.

June 12 (Monday) - Departure from your hometown, TransAtlantic flight to Paris.

June 13 (Tuesday) - Morning arrival at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport - no later than 10:00 AM. The journey continues as we connect at Charles de Gaulle Airport with the fantastic TGV bullet train for First Class travel to Avignon. We'll enjoy a wonderful luncheon treat onboard as the panorama of France unfolds before us.
The goal of any real traveler is to experience that "sense of place." Beauty is found not just in a museum or monument. It's also right outside your train window.
Our enchanting hotel in Avignon awaits us. It's a wonderfully atmospheric hotel perfectly situated just off the courtyard of the Palais des Papes. The building dates back to the 14th Century, when the papacy was moved to Avignon from Rome.
After a relaxing dinner with wine, if everyone can stay awake, we'll have a brief tour orientation before a very well-deserved sleep. (Avignon)

June 14 (Wednesday) - First a delightful French breakfast; then we're off on a private van tour to St. Remy de Provence, known as the "Heart of Provence", to visit its celebrated authentic street market. We can also tour the home of Nostradamus or visit the asylum where Vincent van Gogh was a patient and where he painted many famous nearby landscapes. Lunch will be on your own at any one of St. Remy's charming sidewalk cafes.
There will be plenty of free time for discovery or shopping in St Remy's wonderful Street Market. After a nice visit to St. Remy, our next stop is the nearby village of Les Baux, a breathtaking hill village that seems to have sprung naturally from the stones on which it is perched. We won't want to leave this idyllic place, but we must return to our charming Avignon hotel and a nice dinner in the town.

June 15 (Thursday) - After a delicious breakfast our next adventure takes us to our first stop, our home-away-from-home for the next three nights, a lovingly-restored 12th century farm complex nestled at the foot of the stunning hilltop village of Gordes. After a check-in we're off for a tour of Gordes, with its vaulted medieval lanes and panoramic views. There'll be free time for relaxation or shopping and a tour of the Vasarely Museum of op art with its collections sheltered in the 12th century castle where the artist lived.
Lunch today will be a delightful picnic featuring local specialties and wines.
We'll also stop by to see the "Bories", ancient slab stone domed dwellings that were traditionally used as shelters for centuries. And no visit to Provence would be complete without a pilgrimage to the Abbaye de Senanques, the lavender abbey.
Then it's on to Roussillon, a breathtaking hill village famous for its red and ochre buildings mingling with the surrounding pink cliffs.
Dinner tonight will be a special treat! We'll dine at poolside at our home-away-from-home Bed and Breakfast.

June 16 (Friday) - After a relaxing breakfast at poolside, we travel to the famous city or Arles. We enjoy a morning walking tour with a local guide of the impressive Roman arena, theater, and Romanesque church and cloister of St Trophyme. After the formal tour, enjoy free time to explore this charming town. You may locate some of the many scenes immortalized by Van Gogh, or make your way to "the little night café" made famous by the artist, and remaining virtually unchanged over the years. Lunch will be on your own today.
In the afternoon it's on to Nimes for a tour of the city's many Roman sites, such as the arena and "Maison Carree", an elegant Roman temple. We'll also go to one of the region's most acclaimed attractions: the triple-tiered Pont du Gard, Roman aqueduct.
Then we'll enjoy the scenery on the way back to our little hideaway near Gordes.
Dinner tonight will be a memorable experience.

June 17 (Saturday) - After breakfast at our charming B & B it's on to the coastal scenic road to Hyeres for fun-in-the-sun on the French Riviera! We'll enjoy free time at a "too beautiful" beach and a nice picnic by the sea.
For those who prefer there is also free time to explore in the historical town of Hyeres or indulge in more shopping.
Evening brings us back our cozy farmhouse for our "Farewell to Provence" dinner. Then we retire to our rooms for our last overnight stay in the fragrant air of The South of France.

June 18 (Sunday) - After another wonderful breakfast, we're off to our first "island" visit, the charming town of L'Isle sur la Sorgue, with its canals, water mills. This amazing Provence town sits on an island in the crystal clear Sorgue River. But perhaps its greatest claim to fame is its renowned authentic street market. This is not to be missed! Lunch today will be a fun picnic assembled from foods selected from the market.
In the afternoon we'll make our way back to Avignon to board the TGV to Paris. After our arrival, we'll check into our lovely hotel on our second island: Ile St-Louis - an island in the middle of the Seine River, in the heart of Paris. is Ile St.-Louis - an often-overlooked haven of tranquility right in the middle of the vibrant city. The Ile will be our base for visiting the landmarks and museums of "The City of Lights", but also the wonderful "off the tourist track" places known only by insiders. We'll enjoy picnics on the Seine, food fit for the gods, heavenly chocolate, the greatest art on earth, and, most importantly, Joi d'vivre. Dinner will be at a very special restaurant just near our hotel on Ile St-Louis.

June 19 (Monday) - After breakfast at a Parisian sidewalk café, we'll begin the day with a walking tour of Ile St-Louis and Ile de la Cite, including the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, as well as other not-to-be-missed sights. After a delightful picnic by the Seine, we will make our way to the fabulous Galeries Lafayette, for an eye-popping shopping extravaganza. Dinner will be followed by an unforgettable evening entertainment.

June 20 (Tuesday) - After breakfast, we're off on a journey to our third island: Mont-Saint-Michel. On our trip to Le Mont, we'll have time for a stop at Giverny, Monet's fabulous home and gardens - the inspiration for many of the world's best-loved paintings. Then it's on to our next overnight stop, Mont-St-Michel. This island off the rugged north coast of France is truly one of the wonders of the world. A towering cathedral dominates the center of this remarkable landmark, and a huge white sand plain surrounds le Mont. Every evening the tide sweeps in, covering the plain and creating a majestic island. Fresh seafood is available at alarmingly charming restaurants in the village that encircles the Abbey Mont-Saint-Michel. Spend one unforgettable night in one of the Mont's enchanting hotels, and explore the hidden nooks of the island after the tour buses have gone away... We'll enjoy dinner at a restaurant with a panoramic view of the tidal spectacle.

June 21 (Wednesday) - Ahhh, breakfast on Le Mont...what could be better? This morning we return to our island hotel in Paris. The afternoon takes us to the magnificent Luxembough Gardens where we'll enjoy a picnic lunch with our fellow Parisians. We'll alsu enjoy boat rides on the Seine, and a visit to the incomparable Eiffel Tower!
Dinner will be at another wonderful restaurant on Ile-St-Louis.

June 22 (Thursday) - Today is a free day in Paris. Enjoy a day of museum visits, shopping, or whatever your heart desires. Find a wonderful little bistro for a lunch on your own, and explore the miracle that is Paris. In the evening we'll meet for our farewell dinner in a memorable restaurant, before returning to our hotel to prepare for our departure tomorrow.
