                                          Christmastime in England

                                          December 6 – 15, 2019       8 Nights

Come along with Your Man in Europe on the perfect Christmastime journey. Our traveling party will be in jolly old London to see the enchanting Christmas decorations, take in West End plays, and do a little Christmas shopping. Then we’ll move on to visit fabulous York, England, a city that has kept its old world charm through the centuries. The ancient streets will make you feel as if you’ve stepped right into “A Christmas Carol” or “Oliver Twist”. Our travelers will be steeped in holiday cheer and unequaled yuletide atmosphere. Don’t miss this unique Christmastime experience!

December 6, Friday – Depart the USA on flights to London Heathrow Airport. Guests are asked to plan flights to arrive at Heathrow by 10:00 AM on Saturday, December 7. For those flying into Gatwick Airport, please arrange transportation to our London hotel upon arrival.

December 7, Saturday – Guests should plan air travel to arrive at London’s Heathrow Airport by 10:00 AM. Tour guests will be met at the International Arrivals gate at your terminal, and then be transferred to our fantastic London hotel. We will already catch glimpses of the festive holiday decorations as we make our way into the city. Our elegant boutique hotel is housed in a lovely home built in 1718. Each room is decorated in a unique way, and guests feel as if they are visiting a fine London home rather than a hotel. It’s the perfect place to set the tone for an Olde English Christmas!

Once we’re settled in we’ll have a light lunch together at one of the cozy cafes right on our street very near the hotel. Afterward we’ll have a free afternoon to explore the area around our neighborhood. We’ll rendezvous back at our hotel for an early (about 5 PM) dinner at a restaurant steeped in atmosphere  within comfortable walking distance from our next event: the live play of The Snowman at 7:00 PM. After the play we’ll return by taxi to our hotel.

December 8, Sunday – After a relaxing breakfast served in-room we’ll gather downstairs to decide if we want to leave the hotel or not (just kidding). This morning we’ll visit one of London’s iconic department stores: Harrods, arguably the world’s most famous store, for shopping and a lunch on your own at one of the cafes and restaurants at Harrods. Feel like a Toff for a little while as you gawk, window shop, or actually buy some nice things for friends and family back home.  After shameless hob-knobbing with the snob mob we’ll have time to pop back by our hotel to freshen up and leave any purchases in the rooms.

In the afternoon, for those who haven’t had enough department store exploration, we will head for Liberty for more temptations. If you prefer not to OD on shopping venues, enjoy a bit of free time  before gathering in the early evening back at the hotel to have a fun dinner together at one of London’s truly unique restaurants.

After dinner we will be picked up for our private taxi tour to see the Christmas lights and other seasonal spectacles in enchanting London. Our 3-hour tour will take us all around the city to find the most incredible Christmas displays imaginable, plus a visit to a wonderful Christmas market. Our taxis and guides will be ours for the evening – so we can stop anywhere we like for photo ops, WC stops, or whatever suits our fancy.

A word on transportation: During our stay guests will be provided with London Underground tickets for travel on the “Tube”. There is a Tube station just a couple of blocks from our centrally-located hotel. We will make short (one or two stops) trips to most of our daytime and evening activities. As most of our destinations are relatively nearby, the Tube is a good option; but using it can mean walking a fair way (even inside the station once you’ve reached it) Taxis are another option for those who would like to limit walking, and of course, in case of inclement weather. London taxis carry 5 passengers, and when shared the fare is quite reasonable. In most cases we will get a group consensus on how to reach the destinations we will be visiting as a group. All guests are invited to participate in our planned activities, but there is always the option to opt out to pursue other activities.

December 9, Monday – After a lovely in-room breakfast enjoy an entirely free day to pursue a plan your own adventure day. London is overflowing with delights.

“There's more to be seen than can ever be seen,
More to do than can ever be done.

There's far too much to take in here,
More to find than can ever be found.”

From The Circle of Life by Elton John

Everyone who wants one will have a full day pass for travel on the London Underground and buses. Explore to your heart’s content, and enjoy lunch and dinner on your own. Recommendations for restaurants and things to do will be freely offered. Some of our group may want to sail together for a time – however it works out is fine.

Evening brings the opportunity to take in a fabulous live London play. There are so many great plays that it’s difficult to pick just one. For booking tickets after arrival in London it’s recommended to visit the theatre’s box office on Saturday, the 7th to secure tickets, although same-day tickets are often available for many plays.  Advice: Look online to see what is on during our visit. If you must see a particular play, go online and book your tickets as soon as possible. Tickets for Hamilton and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child must be purchased well in advance. The earlier they are booked, the more affordable the tickets for good seats. There is the possibility of same-day tickets, even at these high-demand plays – it’s worth investigating. Double check with Your Man in Europe before making your ticket purchases.

December 10, Tuesday – After being pampered with one more breakfast in our rooms, sadly we have to check out of the hotel and head for the train station for our rail journey to fabulous York. We’ll have a casual morning in our London neighborhood before heading for the train station at about 10:00 AM. Lunch will be on your own on the train. Plan to pick up a tasty portable treat in our neighborhood OR there will be time to pick up a nice Cornish pasty or other lunch items at King’s Cross OR there is a snack bar on the train where you can get food and drinks. If our machinations are effective and all the stars align there should be some complimentary light snacks and beverages provided at our First Class seats. If not, there are drinks for sale in the snack bar.

Our First Class train ride departing London King’s Cross Station takes us into the heart of the fabled city, only a short taxi ride from our cozy hotel in the shadow of the great York Minster. No movie set or fanciful preconceived notion could exceed the ambiance of our historic boutique hotel right in the old town.

Afterward we will take a casual walk around the local area to learn about our nearby surroundings and how to navigate to old city center, followed by some relaxation time until time for Evensong at the Minster.

Afterward we’ll head back to the hotel for a Christmas dinner together there, before snuggling into our beds for a good night’s sleep.

December 11, Wednesday – After breakfast in the atmospheric dining room of the hotel we’ll take a short walk to visit the St. Nicholas Fair for some real Christmas fun. Traditional chalets shine out from their positions along Parliament Street where we’ll find plenty of stalls selling locally-made handcrafted gifts. We’ll also explore Davygate and Coppergate for inspired gift and stocking filler ideas for the folks back home; and we’ll find local flavor at York’s famous Shambles Market.

After our morning ramble we’ll have a light lunch together at an exceptionally atmospheric restaurant. Afterward enjoy some sightseeing on your own. York is full of unique adventures and over-the-top charming sights.

When the sun goes down – around 4:30 – head for the wonderful annual Shambles Christmas Party! There will be festivities galore, and plenty of shopping opportunities. Don’t miss this fun outdoor event. Dinner will be on your own today.

December 12, Thursday – MMMM, another great breakfast at our hotel. Today we’ll make our way to the fantastic York Castle Museum. We’ll experience hundreds of years of York’s history in one place – from recreated Jacobean dining rooms to a whole Victorian era street all decked out for Christmas.

Today’s lunch will be a special treat, English Style. After lunch we will head for the fantastic Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, probably the finest medieval guild hall in the world - right in the heart of historic York. This stunning timber framed building was constructed by a fraternity made up of York citizens to provide a base for charity, worship and commerce.

After our visit there enjoy a bit of free time to explore the area near the guild hall and meet back together for an early dinner together. Then at 6:30 we’re off for the next adventure. Get set for a real Christmas treat like you’ve never seen before.

You’ll want to snuggle under your bed covers when we’re back at the hotel.

December 13, Friday – Enjoy breakfast at our cozy hotel, and then venture out for a day of free time in York. Along the way everyone will have seen things to include on a wish list. Spend the day exploring or just kick back at the hotel. It’s a great day to catch up on Christmas shopping for gifts you won’t find anywhere but York!

There are so many things to see and do you won’t have any trouble finding what suits you. Consider visiting one of the Viking museums, or the fantastic railway museum, or go to Barley Hall for a glimpse into medieval life in olde York.

A bit early (5:00 PM) we’ll gather for dinner together at our hotel. After dinner we’ll walk across the street for the world-renowned York Minster Christmas Carol Concert  at 7 PM. This event is always a sell-out, as people from far and wide head for York to experience it.

December 14, Saturday – After another hearty breakfast we’ll check out of our hotel, leave our luggage at reception, and then have time for last-minute shopping or photo safaris. At 12:00 PM we’ll have a nice lunch together, our last one in York for this trip.

We’ll travel by train via London to London’s Heathrow Airport, where we’ll check into our comfortable airport area hotel. The hotel offers quick and frequent shuttle service to all terminals. After check-in we’ll meet back in the hotel dining room for a “Farewell to England” dinner together.

December 15, Sunday – After breakfast at the hotel shuttles will be available for transportation to all airport departure terminals, just minutes away from our hotel.  It’s goodbye for now – but we’ll be back…

                                                                                      What’s in store for us?

This tour is custom-planned for a small group of no more than 10 guests. Even if you are a seasoned traveler, you have never experienced England like this. We’re sure the magic will captivate you. You’ll be part of a magical adventure - complete with music and surprises that will delight you at every turn.

This is not a “Big Bus Tour”. There will be no wake-up calls at 5 AM to herd onto the buses. Our travelers will have a friendly, extremely knowledgeable guide for the entire trip – not just a bus driver and hum-drum contracted tour guide. We do our best to set the mood, to weave a spell, and to make yours a total experience.

Hotels and most restaurants on the entire tour have been selected for their very specific location or high level of “atmosphere”. The small group size allows us to personalize the experience in a way large groups simply cannot do. We make it easy, comfortable and stress-free. No guest has to worry about the details of where we are going next. You will feel as if you are not a tourist, but a guest of your British friends.

This is a complete tour; and the prices are not increased during the trip through unexpected charges for “extra” tours and arrangements you must handle on your own. If there will be any optional tours or activities not included in the cost everyone will be advised well before signing up for the tour. Most meals are included, and those that are not included are detailed in the itinerary.
